Water - A Serious SubjectWritten by
I've been thinking about that wonderful substance we call water lately and not just because of the much-publicised shortages. Over Christmas I, like most people became a little reckless with my food and drink intake and, shortly after Christmas I discovered that my blood pressure had become excessively high (something I monitor frequently since my stroke last year). After much thought, I realised that my water intake had reduced immensely over the previous couple of weeks and I consciously returned to drinking about 2 to 3 litres per day and, after only 2 days my blood pressure had reduced by about 20%. It is rather amazing that, according to one source: "on the average, the human body loses more than two litres of water each day through perspiration, urine, faeces and respiration." "During exercise, the body can lose up to 3 litres of water per hour." "The average daily requirement for Water is 35 millilitres per kilogram of body weight and for endurance athletes and people who exercise in extreme heat, the daily requirement for water is 42 millilitres per kilogram of body weight." Further, "the human body can survive for only a few days without water and the loss of 9-12% of body weight due to water loss can be fatal. Water comprises 50% - 60% of the total weight of the human body." According to this same source, "tap water may contain the minerals: Bromine, Chlorine, Fluoride and Lithium and toxic minerals: Aluminium Sulfate (which is sometimes added to tap water in some areas of the world as a sterilising or sparkling agent) and Mercury". We may also be ingesting the "Exotoxins: DDT, Aldrin, Dieldrin and Carbon Tetrachloride. Other Toxic Minerals mentioned - Tap Water is sometimes contaminated with Arsenic and is prone to contamination with Lead (from water pipes)". The current situation will be much worse than ever with very little fresh water being added to our supplies and presumably more and more chemicals being added in an attempt to overcome this problem. So, let us cherish this vital fluid: save it, recycle it and above all, keep it clean. We must stop polluting our water supplies, creeks, rivers, storm water drains, etc. and for the sake of our own health we should boil and filter the water from the mains, before drinking it. his article is intended to be informative and interactive.
