FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

How much water should I use?
The water level markings on the tub are intended as a guide only. Although, in the first few weeks after birth it is important that there is sufficient water to cover your baby's shoulders. This will ensure your baby does not get cold.

What is the most suitable water temperature?
The water temperature should be between 35ºC and 37ºC. The temperature can be taken with a baby bath thermometer and for extra safety you can use the "elbow test". Because of the small water surface area of the TummyTub, the water will remain at a comfortable temperature for about 20 minutes.

How do I hold my baby?
The rounded shape of the TummyTub helps to support your baby. You only need to support your baby's head under the chin. The advantage is that you always have one free hand to wash and comfort your baby.

Does the TummyTub help with wind/colic?
Yes, first you should massage your baby's tummy, with some mild and suitable oil, in a clockwise direction. Then give your baby a relaxing bath in the TummyTub. This will certainly help to relieve any pain caused by wind and colic.

Does the TummyTub help with sleeping problems?
Yes, a warm and relaxing bath is always soothing if sufficient water at the correct temperature is used. Ensure the water covers your baby's shoulders.

Is the TummyTub too narrow?
No, babies enjoy the feeling of security and confinement that the TummyTub affords.

How do I clean the TummyTub?
With a mild detergent. This will also remove any remains of bath oil from the inside walls of the tub. Do not use abrasive cleaners.

When should I stop bathing my baby in the TummyTubd?
Although the TummyTub was originally developed for babies from birth to 6 months, many midwives and parents tell us that their children love being in this familiar and trusted environment for much longer.

Is it bad if my baby wants to stand up in the TummyTub?
No, because as your baby develops, the buoyancy of the water will encourage your baby to learn to stand.

Why not use a household bucket?
A household bucket is not designed for bathing babies safely and the overall shape is not suitable.

Furthermore, the disadvantages of using a normal household bucket are:

  • Normal buckets are too low and too narrow. This results in the water level being too low to provide the necessary warmth for the baby and, both mum and infant are hindered in their movements. However, simply using a bigger bucket doesn't give the child the support or a comfortable sitting position.
  • Normal buckets do not have an anti-skid bottom. The bottom of a normal bucket is not curved and therefore, does not give the baby any support.
  • Babies discover their new world by touching with their hands and tasting with their mouth. Because normal buckets are not meant for bathing babies the pigments in plastic buckets will most likely contain dangerous, toxic elements.
  • The handle of the bucket can easily hurt your baby's hands or fingers, but it also represents an extra risk, a toddler, brother or sister could - simply by holding the handle - pull the bucket from the table.

Remember: never leave your baby alone while bathing!
NEVER leave your baby unattended even whilst in the TummyTub!
BABIES CAN DROWN VERY QUICKLY and completely silently!
ALWAYS keep your baby within arm's reach!
NEVER leave baby in the care of children!
