Not Just For Talking or Eating

Your tongue makes it possible to talk and it would be almost impossible to eat without it and, without those taste buds, how could we enjoy our food so much. But, it holds and whispers secrets. What do you suppose your tongue is saying about you and your health, right now? Take a look and you may discover the cause of your discomfort because curious appearances of the tongue can be a vital clue to your health.

Originating in traditional Chinese medicine, is the study of the intricate characteristics of the tongue that provide vital information about certain systems of the body and how they are functioning. These signs may even confirm a diagnosis, they are a surprisingly accurate tool. From time to time, you may have notice that someone you know or met had a white, yellow, green or even a black coating over their tongue. A small amount of coating can be normal but, if a large amount of coating is present and lingers for a prolonged period, this may suggest an underlying health problem. These coatings can result from many things, including a dysfunctional or toxic liver; poor digestion; food allergies; fungal infections; excessive use of alcohol and/or cigarettes, dehydration and many other ailments. Of course, one shouldn't be fooled by a yellow coating appearing after eating turmeric (curries) or a frightening red coating, that can look like blood, after eating beetroot.

If the coating is irregular and perhaps, resembles a road map, it is known as a geographic tongue and is commonly associated with a liver dysfunction. If nausea, bloating, flatulence, excessive burping and/or indigestion are being experienced along with the tongue coating, it is likely that poor digestion; stomach infection or food allergies are the cause. The coating on the tongue can also be caused by an overgrowth of bacteria or Candida (a subject we covered in an earlier article), in the digestive system.

The good news is that generally, if we eat healthy, nature-provided foods and avoid toxins in all its forms, our tongues will find little to gossip about. But, like all gossip, there is always an element of truth amongst the fiction. So, find someone who knows the difference.
