You won't be told - you have to ask! ... ContinuedWritten by
Last month we touched on the subject of the side effects of prescription drugs and coincidently within a short time, Channel 9 ran a story on a similar subject. On their "A Current Affair" program, they covered a story about children with ADHD and the side effects of the various drugs used to treat this said condition, including Retalin. They reported that a class action is being undertaken against the Drug Company. Well it will be of interest, that in the Australian Drug Guide, the known side effects are well documented and such details are therefore available to health care professionals. The problem is that such professionals rarely advise the people who really need to know, the ones taking or those who are the carers of those, taking the prescribed drugs. Others may remember as I do, albeit a bit vague now, that many years ago there was quite a bit of publicity given to the fact that many drugs would no longer have the information sheets enclosed. This was, said to be, because there was a danger of this information being out of date by the time the product was actually sold. Also, if I remember correctly, we were being encouraged to ask our Pharmacists for a current print out, at the time of purchase. I do remember thinking at the time that this was probably a good idea but in fact, this system almost always insures that the sufferer remains ignorant unless the manufacturer, practitioner or pharmacist volunteers the information. Let's face it, when we are sick we are not well enough to know what to ask. That's why we needed help in the first place. I think that out of date information would be better than no information. This system also results in shifting of legal responsibility from those who should be responsible (the drug manufacturer, the health care professional and the pharmacist) to the one person who is seeking professional advice in the first place, because they have no idea of what to expect. Many of you will remember my article on Candida albicans over-proliferation and how many prescription drugs such as Antibiotics, Ventolin, Cortisone and other treatments, are just what Candida ordered, to proliferate. But how many people are warned of this? Again, I stress - Ask and be aware! If any of the side effects become evident, then immediately report these to your health care professional.
