The following article appeared in the 'LIVING & LEARNING' section of the March 2008 issue of Living Now magazine. Mystery of the right brain -can everybody become a genius?by Dr. Hazel Wardha
Keigo is one of the many child geniuses that I have met at the Shichida Child Academy in Tokyo. At the age of eight, Keigo had read physicist Stephen Hawking's book on the black hole and had some advice for the author: "Try seeing the black hole not from here but from there. When two black holes meet and merge, it is terrible." He uses his right brain faculties to observe paranormal phenomena and to comprehend difficult subjects such as physics. The workings of the right brain were unknown until recently. Many people still believe that the left brain is all-sufficient and that intellectual powers are enough. However, the reality of today's children is making parents and educators realise that the right brain research explains their abilities and behaviour. It is believed that over 90% of children born today are 'indigo' or 'crystal' children, whose consciousness is anchored more in the right than the left brain. These children are tapping powers we never knew existed, as if they are perfectly normal. Watching them miraculously heal themselves or their family members, rapidly memorise enormous amounts of information and recall with precision and understanding, predict future events, improve their athletic ability instantaneously or cleanse a polluted environment just through visualisation is like watching beings from another planet in a sci-fi movie. Yet, these add up to a reality that has already dawned upon us. The human race is clearly entering a new stage of evolution. Foremost amongst the new educators is Dr Makoto Shichida from Japan. He has founded, in Japan, over 470 special academies for children, after school hours, where right brain training is imparted. Dr Shichida is a participant in a world-wide revolution in education which is changing the way we understand children, their brain capabilities, and their learning styles. He has committed the past 40 years to experimenting with techniques to stimulate early development of right brain education in children, beginning in the womb and continuing through adulthood. THE RIGHT BRAIN HAS FOUR UNIQUE FUNCTIONS: 1. Resonance, which allows the right brain to receive external information as wave motion: 2. Imaging, which has the power to make things happen exactly as visualised: 3. High speed, high volume memory: 4. High speed automatic processing: HOW DO I BECOME A GENIUS? According to Dr Shichida, "Everybody is born with the capacity to be a genius. That particular talent is located in the right brain. But it is precisely that portion of the brain that the prevailing educational system fails to tap into. Schools are unilaterally geared to the left brain, which is rational, linear and selfish, while the right brain is more geared towards intuition and love for others. The right brain has a mechanism allowing it to quickly absorb a lot of information - right at the pre-verbal stage of infancy." As for babies, according to Doctor Shichida, "The foetus develops the right half of the brain earlier than the left half. In their first months, babies are extremely eager to learn and open to new impulses. For example, parents can show their baby flash cards very quickly - one card per second - enabling them to learn to read much faster and earlier as children. Even the ability to calculate, which was always considered a left brain activity, can be sped up by stimulating the right brain. But this must always be done in a relaxed and pleasurable way. Parents must not force anything." WHAT MAKES A GENIUS? Geniuses have found the right balance between their right and left brains, while ordinary people only use the left half of their brain. Dr Shichida says it's not too late for adults to stimulate their brains: "For instance, you can read a book aloud while you play the audio version of the same book on a CD player two to four times at a fast speed. This will enable you to read faster, think faster and finish work faster. Or you can close your eyes, breathe deeply three times, exhale completely and count for eight seconds, then inhale filling your abdomen as if it were a balloon while you imagine that everything you do will go well ... or start to paint." Educators are becoming increasingly aware that a new breed of children is manifesting today. These children are bored with left brain education and become fidgety in class and for want of proper stimulation become naughty and lack concentration. Many such children are being diagnosed as suffering from Attention Deficit Disorder or ADHD and are medicated. "Everybody is born with the capacity to be a genius. That particular talent is located in the right brain, but it is precisely that portion of the brain that the prevailing educational system fails to tap into." Dr Shichida is building on the original research of American Professor Roger Sperry, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1981. Until then the right brain was called the silent area of the brain because no one understood its function. Now we know it is the inspiration brain. It is not enough to feed our students with knowledge and facts - that is the left brain, slow way of learning. We must train the right brain and keep the two connected through life and hemisphere synchronisation. The right brain waves influence healing and most of the children in the Shichida Child Academics are able to heal their relatives and friends of minor or major illnesses. Most of the children, ranging from the ages of three and over, are meditators. During experiments these children hold a bean in their hands and after a 15-minute meditation the bean has sprouted due to the energy generated. 1 have personally witnessed them all experiencing vastly expanded states of consciousness or Buddhic consciousness during the 'twin hearts' meditation that 1 conducted for these children in Tokyo. Surely, a new race is in the making, a race in which the habit of the heart is predominant, an essential ingredient of right brain training. Love between the parent and the child activates the right brain functions. Rather than a parenting style that is concerned with scholastic scores only, right brain training encourages a parenting style that understands the minds of children and helps them develop their full potential.
Dr Hazel Wardha is the Director of the Ashish Institute for Inner Studies and an international lecturer of Pranic healing and Grand Master Choa Kok Sui courses. Her special interest and concern is for the children of today and she has invited Dr. Shichida to Melbourne to enlighten and train us in right brain education in April 2008.
