We can't eat numbers! So why do we? Food Additives
Written by
Colin Ifield
When our food manufacturers want to put something in our diet that is questionable as a healthy additive or may even be substantially poisonous to us, what do they do? Apply for permission for its use with the "responsible" government agency (FSANZ) whom, after whatever tests and result they get from such tests; approve of its use and issue it a number. The fact that it was a questionable substance in the first place must give cause for concern. But then to disguise it with a number so that most people have no idea what they are consuming is absolutely terrifying.
As demonstrated in a previous article, Aspartame (or food additive E951 or 951) can have extremely devastating health implications and yet we consume it in enormous quantities. We have all heard the remarks of trusting souls: "but if it was bad for me they wouldn't put it in our food, would they?" Is this blind faith, or what?
Most people know someone who suffers allergic reactions to some additive or another and many of these people have been hospitalised, because of such reactions. Some of these chemicals can cause asthma attacks, stomach problems, hyper-activity and even heart attacks, just to name a few.
These food additive numbers are thrown around like flight numbers or bus routes. And, I for one would prefer to know that I am flying high on a 747 plane rather than on a 621 hallucinatory drug or that I was on a bus route, rather than a buzz rout. The fact is, that most of us are not aware of what has been put in our food to simply make it taste sweeter, to add colouring, to increase its shelf life and, in many cases, it is added simply to sell more product. It seems that our health is very low on the priority list of the manufacturers.
For those of you who have access to the web, try looking up "food additives" in Google. There are currently 5,580,000 sites listed - the majority of which are against the indiscriminative use of food additives.
What are we doing to ourselves? Eating and drinking poison and worse still, feeding it to our children by the bucket full, every day of the year.
My simple solution and what I suggest to my family and a friends, is: "If it's got a number, don't eat it!"
