GREY HAIRS OF THE SPINEColin Ifield
Most back and other pain, comes from adhered muscles and contrary to common belief, has nothing to do with spinal abnormalities. Dr. Sarno, a professor and attending physician for spinal injuries at the rehabilitation centre of the New York University, in his book "The Mindbody Prescription", states: "Structural abnormalities of the spine are simply 'grey hairs of the spine' and in my experience they are rarely the source of pain". Such abnormalities are present, in varying degrees, in most people over the age of twenty; even in those who have never suffered pains. The pain usually comes from adhered muscles and these muscles become adhered through spasm. The two main causes of muscular spasm are physical stress of overworked muscles and emotional stress (what Dr. Sarno calls Tension Myositis Syndrome or TMS), where the emotional stress manifests in stressed muscles. "One must bear in mind that any structural abnormality is routinely said to be the cause of pain, when found on X-ray or imaging studies, in patients with TMS. In my experience they are rarely the source of the pain", says Dr. Sarno. In fact, after some 24 years of treating patients, Dr. Sarno has concluded that very rarely conditions such as Degenerative Osteoarthritis, Spinal Stenosis, Disc Herniation, Scoliosis, Spondylolisthesis and Osteoarthritis of the hip, to name a few, are the cause of pain. My personal experience supports Dr. Sarno's findings. Having suffered chronic back pain for more than 20 years and, being told that I would end up in a wheelchair unless I had an operation on my spine, I was fortunate enough to get permanent relief by simply having 4 treatments of Deep Muscle Therapy. Many clients of Sydney Wellbeing Centre report similar experiences. They say that the treatments have relieved their long-standing crippling pain that they thought was incurable. Muscular adhesions from both physical and emotional stress can usually be released in 3 to 4 sessions of Deep Muscle Therapy.
