In our quest for health and wellbeing, it is imperative to release stress and tension, be it mental or physical. As a Body Psychotherapist my focus is on the integration of both body and mind. There is a wealth of data indicating that our mind and body are involved in constant two-way communication. Like traffic on a highway, messages are sent from the cells of our body to the brain and from the brain to the body. Blocked emotions or unexpressed or repressed feelings create a traffic jam, resulting in emotional turmoil that can have a negative impact on our health.

The Philosophy of BodyMind Psychotherapy is to work directly with the subconscious body/mind. To keep it simple, everything that is not of the intellect or conscious is of the subconscious, which includes every molecule of the body. Our bodies and minds function together as parts of an interconnected system and interact with each other. Up to date research confirms that although our conscious brain stores some memory, the deeper, older messages are stored in the subconscious mind and the body. Therefore, it can only be accessed through the body and the subconscious. We cannot heal our emotions or our body by talk alone.

The need to work with the body and subconscious mind in order to heal has been scientifically proven through a vast amount of research released by the USA scientist, Dr. Candace Pert. She was the first scientist to discover "molecules of emotion" located in the body. In fact she suggests that our whole body is our subconscious. Her pioneering research shows how the chemicals inside our bodies form a dynamic information network, linking mind and body, establishing the biomolecular basis for our emotions. All our unresolved thoughts and emotions, the negativity we hold on to, manifests in the body. As a result our body becomes the battlefield for the war games of the mind and the end result may be emotional and physical turmoil and ill health. Here is a simple biology lesson, something that should be taught at school. Our brain function, to the best of our current limited knowledge, is divided into a number of segments.

Conscious brain:
This part deals with logic, intellect, verbal language, thinking and planning. This part of the brain is well developed only in the human species.

Subconscious brain:
The subconscious to a large extent is in control of our healing, automatic physical functions, our emotions and is connected via the brain stem to our central nervous system and the entire body. This part of us stores all our memory, feelings, sensations and intuition.

Western Medicine model of healing is based on the work of Descartes, a 17th century philosopher, who declared the body, mind and soul to be separate entities, entirely unrelated to each other.

Modern science is proving that the emotions, mind, body and soul are connected and play a vital role in health.

Optimum health and vitality depend on a healthy balance between mind and body. Body Psychotherapy helps you live in the 'now' and helps you to reconnect with the life force within your cells.

Clients seeking treatment are usually very much like you and me, people who function well in most areas of their lives and who are often very successful people. They may feel however, that they cannot make successful relationships, some are depressed, anxious or stressed or have specific issues that have continued to bother them throughout their lives.

BodyMind Psychotherapy treatment involves working with the Autonomic nervous system; muscles, feelings, senses, movement and sound. The method does not involve bodywork or any attempt to manipulate or change the body: it uses the body as a way of accessing those aspects of ourselves that are outside our awareness or conscious mind. In other words it is working directly with the subconscious bodymind.
